Freshman English Common Text (Isabel Wilkerson)

The Great Migration was a six million Afrio-American movement to the North, Mid-West, and West. Isabel Wilkerson explained that this was the first time Afro-Americans had the option to reach their dreams and do what the government and laws could not do; set them free. Moving to these unknown places was a risk Afro-Americans wanted to take because staying the South was rock bottom, and once people hit rock bottom there is nowhere else to go except up. Ninety percent of Blacks lived in the South so they were use to the hot/warm climate. The people who moved North and to the Mid-West had to experience new weather, new opportunities, and a new life. The South did not want to see Afro-Americans progress. The government and some natives felt that life in the South was already a fine life because it’s what they grew up in. Ms. Wilkerson made me realize that without the Great Migration many people that are well known in society today would not be alive and relevant.

My view of Freshman Seminar (Self - Reflection)

Honestly, I did not gain anything from freshman seminar. All we did was take notes on presentations, which I must admit some were entertaining. But then once that was over and we were left on our own that’s when everything got out of hand. So through this class my overall view of the first semester is nothing is as organized as it may seem. For example, when it came down to presenting we did not know who was going when and on November 29th nobody knew if we had class or not. I was sitting at the Quad waiting and even asked the lady at the desk; she did not even know. I also learned that when working in a group I need more patience than what I have because once again, nothing is as organized as it may seem. I guess the only beneficial thing that could have come out this class that may have helped me in the first semester is meeting people and researching.

The Other Presenters

The first day groups were to present it did not work out so well. Everyone had a Mac. Macs do not have the place on the laptop to hook up to a projector. So, they tried to hook it up from the USB; that did not work. Other than that everything else went fine. When it was my group’s day to present half of the class time was spend waiting for the projector and it was the day many people left to go home for Thanksgiving, so nobody except the people that had to present except like one other person showed up to class. Then, we were still given a time limit which everyone forgot about. It was only two groups to present. If the projector was on time then we would have never had to rush. The group that presented after mine was also rushed. I feel like the information groups presented were well researched and well put together.

Self-Reflection

Freshman Seminar has finally ended. The lectures and the group presentations required to complete this course turned out to be a little more amusing and interesting than what I had originally thought it was going to be. I really enjoyed the first lecture with Dr. Carr and maybe about 2 others, but Dr. Carr's lecture was definitely the best.

Working with my group to finish the project or the presentation was a bit difficult because we had conflicting schedules and when we agreed to meet things kept coming up etc. But we got it done and it actually turned out pretty well. We worked well together and our project turned out to be a pretty good one, it was just hard to get the ball rolling.

One thing that I didn't like was that I was not receiving emails about when blogs were due and instead of knowing ahead of time, I always found out on sundays when the blog was actually due and i usually had to find out through a friend... I don't really ike to depend on others when it comes to my individual work.

Homecoming Game

I was so excited that the football team won the game. Apparently Howard's football team has not won their homecoming game since 2001... yes that's 10 years worth of losses for the Bisons. But this was a new year and our boys played hard. The game was packed with students, faculty, families of the students, and celebrities. Everyone had always said Howard Homecoming was epic. Actually winning the game was just the icing on the cake.

I'm in the Showtime Marching band. I play alto saxophone and had been practicing hard all week with the band in preparation for the half time show this past Saturday. The hours at practice paid off on saturday when we performed. We did such a good job. Overall the game was good. Our boys fought hard and that paid off too.

All the events that lead up to homecoming were cool too. The yard fest was one of my favorite things. It reminded me of some of the tailgaiting events we have back at home. Overall it was just an awesome experience. I enjoyed my first Homecoming at Howard University

Prestige: The Epitome of Distinction #HUHC 2011

Homecoming was an amazing experience. When we had the unveiling I was a little sketchy about how it was going to turn out, but once the event got closer it was worth wild. The events I went to were the Celebrity Basketball Game, Yard Fest, R&B Concert, the football game and the Step Show.

The Celebrity Basketball game was entertaining but many of the celebrities were not that big of a deal to me. It was like a regular basketball game with a couple stars, Howard players, and And1 basketball players. There was a halftime performance my future and I only knew 2 songs so that was ok. I had front row seats, the price of being on time for things!

Yard Fest was not all that great because once again I did not know many songs. I was in the second row for that because once again I was early. I hate being late to an event even if it’s not going to start on time. It was too many amateur artists. My favorite performers were Kes the Band, some lady from New York, Gyptian. The other performers were Big Daddy Kane, Young Jeezy, Whodini, and Wale; I do not listen to them that much.

R&B music is my favorite kind of music so the R&B concert was the best event! Joe, Avant, Melanie Fiona, Monica, and Tyrese were A W E S O M E! It has been a while since I heard Joe and Avant music but Melanie Fiona, Monica, and Tyrese were the main people I wanted to see. I once again had excellent seats and I met Wesley Jonathan.

I got to the football game during halftime. I like the battle of the bands, their performances are so entertaining. And Howard beat NC A&T in OT. We haven’t won a homecoming game in years so this was a real big celebration for everyone. Plus, I’m in Blue Crew so we were hyping up the crowd and players. It was nice seeing the Alumni cheerleader get together with the current cheerleaders. I was also in a group photo with Angie Martinez and would have taken a picture with Lance Gross but he walked by me too quick.

The Step Show was hype. The Drew Hall Step Team set the mood of the show, and then it died down and came back up gradually. I also saw my friend who came from back homelike he always does. It was nice seeing him with the Iotas watching them Stroll, I think Howard’s Iotas should have stepped because whoever those guys were messed up a lot. The Sigmas won “) and I believe their sisters won too; Zeta Phi Beta. It was like a party there while waiting in between time of the show. At the end Travis Porter performed.

I’m glad I changed my mind about being on the homecoming committee for freshman year because I wanted to enjoy the excitement. Next year I will think about joining for sure. Lance Gross also tweeted that’s our homecoming was better than CAU but, this is Howard so of course we were going to have the Greatest Homecoming On Earth (GHOE). This

Lecture Summary

All of the lectures in Freshman Seminar have been informative and I have learned something different from each speaker that has come to give us insight. I like the fact that all of the lectures were different and that the speakers were different in how they delivered their topics, but at the same time they all tied into eachother.

I like that this class gives us assignments and opportunities to see things I might not have seen otherwise. The burial grounds, Morehouse Lectures, the play, convocation and a few others were all things that Freshman Seminar opened up my eyes to.

This class has given me insight on my cultural background. I learned a lot through these pass couple of months not only about my people and my ancestors, but I even learned a little about myself in the process. I got to meet new people in my groups.

Although sometimes I dread having to get up early for class, I am glad I had to take this class. It has opened my eyes to a few things that would have remained dormant otherwise.
